About

Modern fencing, with the use of the electrical scoring apparatus, has changed the character of the sport from what it was forty or more years ago. Older fencers in particular are aware of the changes, to the point where they can be heard to say that it is a “new” sport.

Some fencers who have fenced both before and after the introduction of electrical scoring believe that something has been lost from the sport. Previously, hits had to be seen to be valid and there were the possibilities of a fencing “conversation” of blades, until one fencer, seizing a moment of error, or indecision by the opponent would deliver a decisive hit. Thus two experienced fencers could carry on an exchange of movements that was not only satisfying for each fencer, but was also enjoyable to watch.

This desire to fence in a pre-electric style culminated in a group of fencers in Dunedin, New Zealand forming a club to carry out the art of classic fencing: Salle Angelo.
